Julie Lynem
Vice President | M.A., Curriculum and Instruction
Julie is vice president of the board for R.A.C.E. Matters SLO and oversees its parent and youth committee, RaiseUp SLO. She previously served as the nonprofit’s first board president and was a member of the founding Steering Committee.
Through RaiseUp SLO, Julie helps connect with families of color by hosting educational activities and programs. Some of these workshops have tackled difficult topics, including debunking Critical Race Theory, talking to children about race, and how to navigate bullying in school.
Most recently, the group has established Raising Up Rhythms, a drumming and storytelling experience that engages children of all ages. RaiseUp SLO has a continued partnership with the Self-Love Project, launched by a San Luis Obispo student striving to uplift underserved youth.
FUN FACTS:
Julie teaches journalism at Cal Poly. She worked as a journalist for more than 20 years at newspapers in the Midwest and California.
She is an active member of Unitarian Universalists SLO
Julie stays busy in Arroyo Grande raising two kids, a dog, four tortoises and most recently, a hog.
